Highlights of the 4th Annual Lecture on Financial Inclusion by FSD Kenya

The 4th Annual Lecture on Financial Inclusion organized by FSD Kenya featured the reknowned and well established fintech entrepreneur and industry expert, Julian Kyula, the founder of MODE Group.

Julian gave a stimulating talk on what it takes to build a successful fintech company that spans over 26 countries, both in Africa and beyond.

Of particular interest was his broad understanding of where fintech is heading and how newer technologies are influencing the future of this industry. Other speakers that provided insight into the fintech space in Kenya included:

  • Kamal Bhattacharya is currently the Co-Founder and CEO of MojaChat LLC exploring the world of human-powered, AI-assisted tech to improve how we learn languages. He is also a commissioner for the Pathways for Prosperity Commission on Technology and Inclusive Development and a Senior Lecturer at MIT.  He has served as the Chief innovation officer at Safaricom, a board member and CEO of iHub, and spent 16 years at IBM including founding IBM Research – Africa.
  • Josephine Kang’ong’a is the head of Regulatory Framework at the Capital Markets Authority of Kenya. She is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya and has studied law in Kenya and the United Kingdom and practiced in the State Law Office of Kenya before joining CMA. 
  • Eddie Ndichu is currently Managing Director at Opera Software Kenya which launched the OKash loan app. Before joining Opera, Eddie held several positions within the financial sector including as the head of digital financial services at KCB and similar roles in SBM, Standard Chartered Bank and Sema Mobile MVNO. All of this built on a firm foundation from Bamburi Cement and LaFarge. 

 

Enter Blockchain for Fintech

Julian also understands the importance and impact of blockchain technology in the fintech space and is looking into adopting the technology to build products within his company.

Speaking to BitcoinKE, Kyula said: “I’m quite heavy into blockchain right now and the next innovation I have put together is very blockchain heavy. I believe blockchain will start to disrupt regtech and will be core in the next innovation for me.”

Speaking about the wide scope of blockchain, he mentioned why being specific in implementing the technology is key to success.
