The Central Bank of Tanzania Holds a Public Forum on Cryptocurrencies and Forex

The Central Bank of Tanzania (BoT) has held a public forum at its conference hall with the goal of evaluating and assessing the impact of cryptocurrencies and their impact in the Tanzania economy.

The forum, which was held on October 2nd, 2019, comes a month after the Directorate of Economic Research and Policy, Bank of Tanzania (BoT), Majige Budeba, sent out a circular on the bank’s move to conduct a study to assess cryptocurrencies and forex in the country.

The circular, dated 26th August 2016, said the BoT will be visiting various parts of Tanzania in order to gather the needed information for decision making.

According to the Bank of Tanzania official Twitter channel:

“The Bank of Tanzania held the meeting with online trading (Forex and Cryptocurrency) stakeholdes in Dar es Salaam to gather more information about the business in Tanzania. The meeting is part of ongoing survey for online trading under Directorate of Economic Research and Policy.”

The forum is a historic landmark for the country which has not been in the spotlight on cryptocurrencies and regulations around the technology in Africa.

On June 30th, 2018, the Blockchain Association of Tanzania held a commencement seminar at the University of Dar Es Salaam to bring more awareness about blockchain technology to the country and grow a thriving community similar to Kenya and Uganda.

NB: We shall update the post as we get more information on the deliberations at the forum.
