10% of Bitcoins (1.8 Million) Remain Dormant for Over 10 Years

Did you know that about 10% of all bitcoin supply has been locked in dormant bitcoin addresses for over 10 years now?

The current value of this 1.8 million bitcoin stash is estimated to be valued at $23 billion.

While speculation exists as to who owns this huge supply, the creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto, holds over 1 million of these bitcoins which have remained untouched since they were mined. These assets are believed to have been permanently lost.

Currently, a total of 18.5 million bitcoins are in circulation out of a total of 21 million that will ever exist.

Interestingly, out of the 2.5 million bitcoins that remain to be mined, half of this number will be mined in the next 4 years. Here is the breakdown:

  • 18, 500, 000 mined (88.1%)
  • 2, 500, 000 unmined (11.9%)
  • 1, 250, 000 to be mined by 2024 (6%)
  • 21, 000, 000 to be mined by 2140 (100%)
