2 Out of 30 Projects Selected for the 2022 Celo Accelerator Batch 5 Program are African

The Celo Foundation, in partnership with Upright, has announced the participants selected for its Batch 5 cohort in Celo Camp Accelerator program.

Celo Camp is an 8-week virtual acceleration and mentorship program launched in 2020.

In the latest batch, 30 teams were chosen from a group of 395 applicants from over 75 countries. The teams consist of founders creating impactful dApps in several sectors that include:

  • ReFi
  • DeFi
  • The creator’s economy
  • NFTs
  • Tools and analytics
  • Payments
  • Gaming

The projects that are just starting out are drawn out from across the world, with projects from Latin America standing out.

Out of the 30 selected projects, 2 came from the African continent.

Here are the lucky participants building in Africa:

Jiwe – A Gaming Platform

An upcoming game

Jiwe is a virtual platform where players can build, own, and monetize their gaming experiences. Made up mostly of game designers, in 2021, Jiwe said it had 27 games on the platform. The platform is genre, language and platform agnostic, accepting android, PC, and soon, iOS games. 

According to Jiwe:

“We’re dedicated to creating the most unique African story-driven games and to be the ultimate developer hub for creating, playing, distributing games in Africa.”

PiggyFiAfrica – A Remittance Platform

PiggyFiAfrica is platform solving money problems for Africans using blockchain. In particular, PiggyFi is developing a remittance platform that is expected to launch in:

  • Nigeria
  • Kenya
  • Mauritius

To solve problems related to saving and sending money across the continent, PiggyFi is building a blockchain-powered automated P2P payment infrastructure to facilitate:

  • Easy peer-to-peer money transfers within and outside Africa
  • Savings in Stablecoins such as Celo Dollar ($cUSD) and $BUSD

On the app, these stablecoins will be displayed as the dollar equivalent and can then be easily converted into a user’s local currency at favorable rates via the P2P exchange system.

About Celo Camp Batch 5

Celo Camp Batch 5 will feature a curriculum designed for:

  • Startup growth
  • Workshops with industry experts
  • A mentorship program

Some of the mentors who will be particing in the program include:

  • Celo Foundation
  • Flori Ventures
  • Samsung Next

9 Celo Camp Batch 5 finalists will present to the Celo community, investors, and mentors on Demo Day, scheduled for June 14, 2022.

A little over a week later, on June 23,2022, the community will meet the top two winning teams who will receive awards of 10,000 cUSD and 5,000 cUSD, respectively.
