LAUNCH | Decentralized Wireless Service, World Mobile, Launches Google Play App with a Cardano Wallet in Tanzania

The app launch follows a series of beta tests in Kenya, Mozambique, and Nigeria. The app is said to be packed with features including a fiat on-ramp, a Scan for Points functionality, and a Cardano Wallet to manage digital assets such as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and Cardano Native Tokens (CNT) like World Mobile Tokens (WMT)

World Mobile, a decentralized wireless (DeWi) network operator, has revealed the launch of its app on Google Play.

According to World Mobile, the app was initially launched in Zanzibar and is now available to users in Tanzania, United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada starting from August 2023.

“This is an important milestone for us, as we move towards our global vision of democratising connectivity and access to our services,” said Micky Watkins, CEO, World Mobile.

The app launch follows a series of beta tests in Kenya, Mozambique, and Nigeria.

The app is said to be packed with features including a Cardano wallet, fiat on-ramp, and Scan for Points functionality, as delved into below.

  • World Mobile Wallet

According to the company, this is a single-address, non-custodial, light wallet dedicated to tokens built on the Cardano blockchain. This feature provides users with a secure and streamlined platform to manage digital assets such as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and Cardano Native Tokens (CNT) like World Mobile Tokens (WMT).

  • Fiat on Ramp

Simplifying the transition from traditional currencies to cryptocurrencies, the fiat on-ramp service allows users to seamlessly exchange fiat currencies such as U.S dollars and Euros for WMT.

  • Scan for Points

With this feature, users can turn a mobile device into a network scanner, identifying connectivity weak spots across the globe and earn rewards for doing so. These rewards take the form of points which can be redeemed in the World Mobile Marketplace. The data shared by the community will help support World Mobile’s AirNode deployment strategy.

  • Network Service

For users situated within the World Mobile network range, the app allows the purchase and management of data bundles, enabling users to stay connected.

  • Mobile Money

Currently exclusive to Zanzibar, this feature facilitates digital financial transactions within the region, further underscoring World Mobile’s commitment to fostering financial inclusion.

  • Marketplace

The integrated marketplace connects users with a range of products and services, including Netflix and Binance vouchers, which can all be purchased in app.

In Zanzibar, World Mobile has deployed over 300 AirNodes which serve as access points providing wireless connectivity to a significant number of users.

World Mobile has ambitious plans to expand its network to additional countries in Africa and beyond. By extending its reach, the company aims to create a global community-owned wireless network.

World Mobile says its DeWi solution offers connectivity at a lower cost compared to traditional mobile network operators. This affordability is a significant advantage, especially for rural areas in Africa and other regions. The company believes that its solution can facilitate the creation of a ‘sharing economy,’ which can be leveraged to finance the expansion of telecommunications infrastructure in underserved areas.
