Ruja Ignatova, famously known as the Crypto Queen and the Founder of OneCoin, is reportedly alive and living in a wealthy area of Cape Town, South Africa, according to a report from the German publication, Der Spiegel.
The report claims that German authorities, who have been investigating Ruja Ignatova and her accomplices in the OneCoin scam, have determined she is still alive after identifying inconsistencies in the evidence against her former security chief.
Multiple media outlets reported in February 2023 that Ruja Ignatova, who in 2022 was added to FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives List, was suspected to have been killed on the orders of Bulgarian drug lord, Christophoros Amanatidis.

However, in an upcoming documentary, German authorities challenge this theory by pointing to evidence that shows Ignatova’s alleged killer was in Dutch custody when the ‘murder’ was committed.
“We assume or work with the hypothesis that Ruja Ignatova is still alive.
This is also supported by the reactions within her family, with whom Ignatova always maintained close contact. The daughter and sister are not mourned by their family members, so there is apparently no knowledge of Ruja Ignatova’s death within the family.
There is no murder. She is alive, period,” said Sabine Dässel, spokesperson for the German criminal investigation unit LKA Düsseldorf.
According to Dässel, LKA Düsseldorf had received information indicating Ignatova was hiding in South Africa. Additionally, German filmmaker Johan von Mirbach, who is creating a documentary about Ignatova, revealed that his team received a tip about her location from sources within South African security circles.
According to Der Spiegel, German authorities are also drawing on the testimony of former OneCoin employee, Duncan Arthur, who strongly denies claims that Ignatova is deceased. Arthur claims that Ignatova stayed in contact with her brother Konstantin long after the date she was allegedly murdered.
Additionally, Konstantin’s reported visits to Cape Town in 2018 have fueled speculation that he may have traveled there to reunite with his sister.
But the Der Spiegel report suggests that confirming claims of Ignatova being alive could be challenging, as her alleged residence is protected by heavily armed private security firms.
Ignatova also has German citizenship.
