Safaricom’s MPESA is about to enter Ethiopia after advanced talks with the Ethiopian government to have the mobile money service operate in the country almost getting finalized.
Ethiopia will be the 10th country and the most populous country where M-PESA services will be available with over 100 million people. The other countries where M-PESA is already operational include:
- Kenya
- Congo
- Egypt
- Ghana
- Lesotho
- Mozambique
- Tanzania
- Romania
- India
M-PESA, the most successful mobile money service globally, stands as a standard for mobile money for many African countries. The entrance of the service into Ethiopia will enable more seamless digital money transactions which is also expected to enable cross-border transactions.
M-PESA recently launched its M-PESA Global service, in partnership with Western Union, enabling the mobile money service to scale outside of Africa and into other European countries starting with Europe.
Other recent collaborations with global money services like PayPal signal a need to expand offerings beyond African borders and into more advanced markets as mobile money starts to take root.
