Sarafu, a community inclusion currency (CIC) that recently transitioned into a cryptocurrency, is seeing increasing growth and adoption in the coast region of Kenya.

Sarafu works like vouchers, which can be exchanged for goods or services. Anyone with a Kenyan mobile phone line is eligible, including on feature phones.

In Kisauni, a section of Mombasa, another coastal town in Kenya, over 6, 500 people trade with Sarafu, an initiative that is also supported by the Kenya Red Cross, the largest humanitarian organization in Kenya
