Kenya’s top telco, Safaricom, has announced that its popular mobile money service, M-PESA, now has over 30 million customers using the platform in Kenya alone.
With Kenya accounting for 30 million customers, it means the service has 51 million customers across East Africa. Below are the countries where MPESA is operational:
- Kenya
- Tanzania
- Democratic Republic of Congo
- Mozambique
- Lesotho
- Ghana
- Egypt

Safaricom points to its innovative spirit as the reason behind its consistent growth pointing out the products that have driven its success which include:
- M-Shwari
- KCB-MPESA
- Fuliza
Safaricom also points to its local and international partnerships with organizations such as PayPal, AliExpress, and Western Union which let customers send and receive money with ease across borders.
Earlier this year, Kenya’s Central Bank revealed that M-PESA was the main and preferred way that Kenyans across the globe send remittances to family members and friends back home.
M-PESA also has revealed that its business payments service, Lipa Na M-PESA, has more than doubled from 173,000 in April 2020 to more than 387,000 today.
Safaricom and parent company, Vodacom, is looking to grow further across Africa by introducing its super app for customers and businesses across the continent.
