We caught up with Safia Verjee, the Innovation Manager at the Kenya Red Cross, to understand how the organization is using Sarafu blockchain e-Vouchers to offer the needed financial aid to low-income neighborhoods in Nairobi, Kenya, during the current Covid-19 pandemic.
According to Safia, the innovative NGO has been able to successfully use these e-Vouchers to ensure households are getting the needed relief during this difficult period while at the same time enabling the organization to be more accountable to donors.
Currently, her role at the Kenya Red Cross includes exploring different ways of doing things to be more effective and efficient in the way the organization delivers humanitarian aid to those most vulnerable. This includes co-designing solutions with disaster affected communities ensuring that the organization incorporates and leverage on local ideas.
Her roles also includes taking risks and pilot existing innovations through long term development projects with a particular focus on:
- Blockchain technologies
- Digital identities
- Drone and satellite technology for disaster preparedness and response
- IoT solutions for disaster risk reduction
