To redeem Bonga Points for electricity tokens, here is the process:
- Dial *126#
- Select Lipa Na Bonga Points
- Select Pay Bill
- Enter Business Number 888888 for post-paid and 888880 for pre-paid
Speaking about the new redemption program, Peter Ndegwa, CEO, Safaricom, said:
“By partnering with Kenya Power, we hope to give our customers more options and freedom in how they utilize their loyalty points.”
According to Kenya Power, the partnership gives customers ‘an alternative wallet from which to pay electricity.’ Customers however will continue to be subject to applicable electricity tariff.
We published a post about 3 months ago when Bonga Points moved outside the Safaricom ecosystem and said said that these digital tokens would go beyond just payment for goods and services and be used as payment for nearly everything.
Safaricom would later go on to make Bonga Points redemption a permanent feature for the first time since its inception in 2007.
The addition of electricity tokens is just one more step to what we believe to be a wider vision for Safaricom – to see Bonga Points used as payment for everything.
Kenya Power customer base stood at over 7.5 million as at the end of June 2020 and this huge customer base is a low hanging fruit for Bonga Points adoption.
As mentioned in the post:
“The Covid-19 pandemic forms a perfect backdrop for all of the above to take place and the effects of these developments will be felt and seen when the current situation subsides. By then, adoption of this payment method would have been entrenched and its use case finally cemented.”
