Ethereum Naming Service (ENS), the protocol that generates the addresses for usage across Ethereum, has announced that website owners with a Domain Name System (DNS) can now integrate directly with ENS.
According to Brantly Millegan, ENS Director of Operations, this enables the owner of a DNS second-level domain name (a DNS name with one dot in it) to import the same name for use on ENS.
In his given example, if you own ‘example.com’ on DNS, you can import it into ENS as example.com, not example.eth.
It then becomes possible to set ENS records for it, e.g. to allow you to receive payments in cryptocurrencies like ETH, BTC, and DOGE to example.com.
Previously, users had to change to a .eth name if they wanted to get an address through ENS.

According to The Ethereum Name Service:
“While ENS launched in May 2017 only supporting the ENS-native TLD .ETH, ENS has always been capable in principle of supporting more TLDs. To expand the namespace on ENS, we’ve decided against simply creating additional ENS-native TLDs and in favor of integrating the existing DNS namespace.
We think this approach is best for users and gives ENS the best chances for long-term success.”
– The Ethereum Name Service (ENS)
The Domain Name System is how the internet organizes itself. It links domain names like Google.com or Bitcoinke.io to IP addresses so people can more easily find and browse websites.
The Ethereum Naming Service provides web addresses that let users own all data associated with their domain name and can use these web addresses as crypto wallets.
ENS domains have the added bonuses of being decentralized to increase censorship resistance as well as serving as Ethereum addresses.
Instead of typing in 64-character Ethereum addresses and praying that you didn’t transpose a 0 and a O, .eth names allow you to send directly to a website, such as janedoe.eth.
DNS however won’t assume all the qualities that are provided by ENS:
- You can’t guarantee ownership of a DNS name in ENS, since the owner can change
- With .eth names effectively being NFTs, they can be transferred by just sending them, but DNS names cannot
- As NFTs .eth names can also appear in user wallets, which DNS names cannot
While ENS started as only .ETH names for Ethereum addresses, it has grown to be a full-fledged extension of DNS, functioning in parallel and enabling a whole new set of use cases that include:
- A portable web3 username and profile
- Payments in any cryptocurrency
- Decentralized websites
