What is the Metaverse and Why Should You Care?

Would you buy a piece of land that doesn’t exist? What about a virtual car or a pair of virtual shoes?

Well, people are spending millions of dollars to buy virtual land in a virtual world.

If you’re like most people who spend the better part of their lives scrolling on the internet you must have heard the word Metaverse on blogs, Youtube videos, or your friend who never shuts up about NFTs.

The idea of Metaverse rose in popularity when Mark Zuckerburg revealed a new company name for Facebook, Meta (short form for Metaverse), to encompass everything they do to include a virtual world called Horizon that is still in development. Zuck then went on to demonstrate a virtual, fictional 3D world where you can be anywhere, do and be anything with friends using VR and AR technologies.

According to Google:

The metaverse is a hypothesized iteration of the Internet, supporting persistent online 3-D virtual environments through conventional personal computing as well as virtual and augmented reality headsets.

Metaverses, in some limited form, have already been implemented in video games such as Second Life.

But what exactly is the Metaverse? And why is Land in the metaverse that valuable?

Although everyone seems to have their own description, we all seem to agree on one thing – The metaverse will be an immersive, 3D amalgamation of different virtual worlds where we can interact in infinite ways compared to existing 2D platforms.

Players can own parcels or Land and build whatever their version of a virtual world is. People are already building virtual galleries, virtual casinos and hosting virtual events. Think of it this way, anything that is possible in the physical world will be in the metaverse.

Imagine being able to attend a virtual meeting and seeing your workmates as if you were in a physical one? Meta’s Horizon is already doing that with Horizon Workrooms that use VR technology to give users a surreal meeting experience.

The idea of virtual worlds is not something new as we have had video games build virtual environments where multiple players can join, build and create their scenes and experiences.

To sum it up, the metaverse is a place of infinite possibilities.
