NORTH AFRICA | Binance Donates $3 Million to Over 70K Morocco Users, $500K to Over 13K Libya Users in $BNB Airdrops

"In the aftermath of natural disasters, people often lose access to traditional banking at the exact moment when extra funds are needed to help cover medical supplies, food, and other essential needs. Crypto transfers are now increasingly being used to deliver financial aid to disaster victims as they provide fast, low-cost, borderless, and transparent transactions." - Binance Charity

In reaction to a recent earthquake that killed 2,901 people in Marrakesh – Safi, Morocco so far, Binance says it will airdrop up to $3 million in BNB to Binance users identified as living in the areas affected by the tragedy.

The earthquake, which occurred in late September 8 2023 in the High Atlas Mountains region, was the North African country’s deadliest earthquake since 1960 and its most powerful in more than a century, with 2,901 people confirmed dead and 5,530 injured.

Binance Charity, in a press release shared by CEO, Changepeng Zhao (CZ), will be contributing to victims within the affected region who use the Binance app as well as to other Moroccan users.

Identification of the users will be based on Proof of Address (POA) completed before September 9, 2023, in Marrakesh-Safi Province, which has suffered the most significant impact, Binance said. Users who have completed POA before this date in the Marrakesh-Safi Province area will each receive $100 in BNB directly to their Binance accounts.

“We recognize that many users in the affected area may not have yet completed POA. Therefore, for any existing user who completes POA after September 9, 2023, and before September 30, 2023, we will donate $25 in BNB directly to their Binance account.”

Active transacting users across Morocco who are not in the affected area will each received $10 in BNB through airdrops, which is a term used for the distribution of free tokens or cryptocurrencies.

According to Binance, around 70,000 Binance users living in Morocco will benefit from the airdrops starting September 12, 2023.
