So far, the universities that will be participating include:
- Covenant University
- Ahmadu Bello University, Zara
- Kwara State University
- University of Nigeria, Nsukka
- Federal University of Technology, Akure
- University of Nigeria, Abuja
The hackathon, in collaboration with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), is aimed at exposing Nigerian university students early to the careers and business opportunities in blockhain and distributed ledger technologies.
The two-day event is expected to bring together developers, stakeholders, enthusiasts, and students to harness innovation, blockchain literacy, skills development and inclusion.
According to Adeolu Fadele, President, BIAN:
“Even though there is evidence of improved public understanding, increasing mainstream interest, and the emergence of startups that are building practical solutions using the blockchain technology in Nigeria today, all these cannot be considered to be true development until the learning institutions are carried along in structured and sustainable manner.”
The enthusiasm and participation of students across the 6 universities is seen as a good demonstration of a changing culture among Nigeria students that goes beyond obtaining a degree and getting a job. Rather, they are beginning to think outside the box and see real value in emerging technologies like blockchain.
